D.P. #4

  • Due Apr 30, 2019 by 11am
  • Points 20
  • Submitting a discussion post
  • Available until May 17, 2019 at 11:59pm
This assignment was locked May 17, 2019 at 11:59pm.

For this post, think about our discussion of rhetoric and how to use it to analyze a text. You can read (you absolutely SHOULD read this article Links to an external site.  and this article Links to an external site. about rhetoric).

Remember that for this first upcoming project, your job is to analyze a text, so take this time now to practice in this low stakes discussion post. First, read a food related article that interest you; you can browse some articles here Links to an external site. or here Links to an external site.or here Links to an external site.

Then analyze how the article you picked uses ethos, logos, and pathos, and identify the audience for the article (note when analyzing the audience to be s specific and detailed as possible. Think of the following questions:

  • What does the audience expect to learn from this article?
  • What type of ethos does this article establish?
  • How much research do you think the audience expects from this source (an academic peer-reviewed article would have a lot of other peer-reviewed and primary sources, an article from the Food Network would have one or two sources from the field, for instance)?
  • How current is the article's information?
  • Who is the intended audience for this writing (teenagers? Parents? How much money do they make? Where do they live? What is the audience beliefs and values)?
  • What is the age of the audience?
  • What is the educational level of the audience?
  • How much background information does the audience need?
  • What technical terms will the audience need defined?  What terms will they already be familiar with?
  • What is the cultural background of the audience?

In other words, here is an opportunity to practice analysis. This post should be as long as it takes you to address the audience analysis and then to explore how the article uses logos, ethos, pathos to reach that audience.
