COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is intended to prepare you for the TOEFL iBT through regular practice with sample questions, short and full-length practice tests, and by learning tips and strategies for improving your score. Since the TOEFL tests you on reading, listening, writing, and speaking, the more you improve your overall English skills, the better you’ll do on the exam. So pay attention, practice daily, and ask questions!
COURSE ACTIVITIES:
Each week, we will discuss useful skills for mastering each portion of the TOEFL exam. Sample exercises will be studied together and opportunities provided for self-practice. Group work in the form of speaking and listening practice and readings of current events are designed to be thought provoking and engaging (fun). Each week, we will spend one class in the computer lab becoming familiar with the internet-based TOEFL, learning the computer techniques necessary for the test, and practicing the various types of questions which are tested on the iBT.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
There are no grades or formal tests for this course, so it is up to you to decide to complete the homework. There will be a substantial amount of homework assigned each week, and these exercises are meant to help you master the skills, strategies, and tips for improving your score on the TOEFL and to prepare you for high level academic English applications. The more seriously you take your preparation, the more you will improve. If you cannot attend class because of work, family, or other personal issues, please let me know ahead of time (if possible) and then contact me or a classmate to find out what you missed.
Note: To receive a Certificate of Attendance students must have at least 75% attendance (no more than 5 absences).
Please remember to turn off your cell phone. Thank you!

PUBLIC SAFETY AND EMERGENCIES
Public Safety is located in the D building (D171) and can be reached at 425-564-2400 (easy to remember because it’s the only office on campus open 24 hours a day— 2400). Among other things, Public Safety serves as our Parking Permits, Lost and Found, and Emergency Notification center. Please ensure you are signed up to receive alerts through our campus alerting system by registering at RAVE Alert Registration
If you work late and are uneasy about going to your car, Public Safety will escort you to your vehicle. To coordinate this, please phone ahead and let Public Safety know when and where you will need an escort.
Please familiarize yourself with the emergency postings by the door of every classroom and know where to go in the event of an evacuation. Your instructor will be asked if anyone might still be in the building, so check in before you do anything else. Emergency responders will search for anyone unaccounted for.
If a major emergency occurs, please follow these three rules:
1) Take directions from those in charge of the response - We all need to be working together.
2) Do not get in your car and leave campus (unless directed to) - Doing so will clog streets and prevent emergency vehicles from entering the scene. Instead, follow directions from those in charge.
3) In an emergency, call 911 first, then Public Safety.
Please do not hesitate to call Public Safety if you have safety questions or concerns at any time. You may also visit the Public Safety web page for answers to your questions.
