Documenting your sources for discussions and papers

DOCUMENTING YOUR SOURCES FOR ENGLISH 221
FOR DISCUSSIONS AND PAPERS

IN-TEXT CITATIONS

Typically in-text documentation methods for literature require you to provide the page number in parentheses after a quote or paraphrase. However, in this class we might be using so many different editions that page numbers will become meaningless.  Instead, for both our discussions and your papers,  I would like you to provide the chapter in parentheses after a quote or paraphrase.

Thus your in-text citation will look something like this:

Frankenstein appears to fully recover from his endeavors to create his monster, but he is unaware of the horror that lies before him: "My own spirits were high, and I bounded along with feelings of unbridled joy and hilarity" (chap. 6).

Or you could include the chapter in your sentence in this way:

Frankenstein appears to fully recover from his endeavors to create his monster, but he is unaware of the horror that lies before him. In chapter 6, he says, "My own spirits were high, and I bounded along with feelings of unbridled joy and hilarity."

WORKS CITED

For your discussions, you don't need to provide a Works Cited.  However, for your papers, I would like you to provide a Works Cited at the end of your paper.  This means a full bibliographic reference of the text you used.  I've provide a "son of citation" link in this module.  Click on "book" or "web source" and then enter your information and the citation will be formatted for you!
