COURSE DESCRIPTION:

We will be using a variety of tools for class content, participation, group work, and study. Reading classes prepare you for the kind of reading that you will have in academic classes at an American college or university. We will be building reading skills to help you understand, analyze, and discuss a variety of readings in English. Group work and discussion is also very important. We will study with both a textbook and a novel.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: (Skills you will gain during the course)

  • Scan and skim to locate information in a text
  • Read and understand paragraphs and short passages
  • Outline and summarize a paragraph and short selection
  • Express an opinion about a passage
  • Use knowledge of word parts and context clues to guess meanings of new words
  • Use a dictionary to find correct definitions, parts of speech, usage, syllables, and stress
  • Locate level-appropriate reading materials in a library or on-line
  • Read and understand graphs, tables, and charts

GRADED WORK AND FINAL GRADES:

  • You will have reading quizzes and tests.
  • You will have reading for pleasure/novel Literary Circle activities and discussion.
  • You will receive grades both at mid-term and at the end of the quarter. Your grade will

depend on the quality of your work and your effort.

  • Your grade will be based on scores on quizzes and tests, your written work and homework assignments, and on your activity and participation in class:

Class Grades are based on:

Reading Unit Tests 30%

Homework Assignments 40%

Novel Work 20%

Final Exam 10%

 

(This Level 3 Final Exam must be passed in order to move on to RR4.)

 

Your final letter grade will come from this scale:

 

            93 – 100%       =          A          (excellent)

            90 – 92%         =          A-

            87 – 89%         =          B+

            83 – 86%         =          B          (good)

            80 – 82%         =          B-

            77 – 79%         =          C+

            73 – 76%         =          C          (satisfactory)

            70 – 72%         =          C-

            63 – 66%         =          D          (repeat class, good effort)

           60-  62% =        D-

           0 – 59%        =    F          (repeat class, unsatisfactory effort)

 

All assignments given must be submitted by 7am on the day of the DUE DATE.
