READ

Read:

Fractions are very important.  We use them every day.  A fraction tells us how many parts of a whole we have.  The number on the bottom is called the denominator.  The number on the top is called the numerator.  For example, if we have a pizza with eight (8) slices, eight (8) is the whole.  If we eat half (1/2) of the pizza, we have four (4) slices.  If we we eat six (6) slices, that is three quarters (3/4) of the pizza.

We can also use fractions when we talk about people.

Example:

There are 18 students in the class.  18 is the total, so it is the denominator of the fraction.
10 out of 18 students who are women. 10 is the numerator.
10/18
