Read:
You learned how to make Yes / No questions with the verb be and other verbs. You know that Yes / No questions ask for a yes or no answer. Wh questions are questions that ask for information. To form wh questions, follow this pattern:
question word + auxiliary verb (do/does) + subject + base verb + rest of sentence
OR
question word + be verb + subject + rest of sentence
Notice that this is the same pattern that you used for Yes / No questions, but you add a wh question word at the beginning of the sentence.
Question Word | Type of Information | Example |
who | person | Who is your teacher? |
what | thing | What is your work schedule? |
which | one thing or another |
Which occupation do you want to learn about? |
when | time |
When do you go to work? |
where | location or place | Where did you apply for jobs? |
why | reason | Why do you want to be a nurse? |
