Navigators Information

The Basic and Transitional Studies Department has two Navigators. A Navigator is someone who helps people find their way. At Bellevue College, the Navigators help students in ABE and ESL classes to find resources to help them be successful, and to learn about college and career options as they near their final ABE or ESL classes.

Who are the Navigators?

Elaine Nutter: Transitions Navigator
·       Helps students learn about next steps at Bellevue College
·       Assists students with connecting to other departments on campus to continue their education

Tara Wainwright: Student Navigator/I-BEST
·       Explores college and community resources with students to help them do their best
·       Coordinates the I-BEST program

What are common things that the Navigators can help with?

Common questions about resources include:

·       Where can I go for healthcare?
·       Is there any help for finding housing?
·       I’m having trouble at home; who can I go to for help?

Common questions about college include:
·       What if I don’t know what I want to do?
·       What classes should I take?

DROP-IN: Each week, we have drop-in hours in the Student Transitions Access and Resources (STAR) Center. There are usually 1 or 2 Navigators and a Student Advocate from Seattle Education Access in the center at any one time. We are available during that time if students want to drop in for a quick question, need help completing forms or applications, want to check out our transitions resources, or want to schedule an appointment. In the future, we hope to have laptops available for student use, as well as guest speakers from different parts of the campus who can connect with students more easily. This is not a private appointment, but is a great way to ask a few questions and get started.
STAR Center R140A
Tuesdays 10:00am-1:00pm
Thursdays 2:00pm-5:00pm

EMAIL AND PHONE: If you need to schedule an appointment or ask a quick question, feel free to send an email or give us a call. If we don’t answer the phone, it’s usually because we are with another student or are out of the office, and we will get back to you. The contact information is listed above.

Career Site Navigation – The best parts of the Center for Career Connections website:

This introduces them to “Career Specialists” and summarizes a little of how the Career Specialist can help them

Shows the variety of free workshops available to students for job search help

This connects students to a resource showing them pathways to different jobs, education needed, and what Bellevue offers. Students can click on the pathway map, which links them to career information in that career field

CONNECT! Lists actual part-time jobs, full-time jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities that students can browse. Students can create a profile, as well, and get job openings emailed to them. I’m hoping Analisa is integrating this, as well. I think reiteration of this service could be helpful.

Difference between the Counseling Center and the Center for Career Connections

Bellevue College has a Counseling Center with trained mental health counselors who work with students on a variety of issues. Usually, students meet with counselors to discuss personal concerns that may be affecting their ability to reach their goals. Students may also meet with counselors to talk about their careers and help them in moving forward with their career decision-making and planning. When appropriate, the counselors may refer students to outside counseling if more assistance is needed.

Bellevue College also has the Center for Career Connections with Career Specialists available to help students. The Career Specialists helps students identify their interests, values, and strengths, and how they might link to the job market. They have expertise in career research and resources to help students make decisions about what pathway they want to follow and what steps they need to take. They can also help with looking for work including job searching, resume reviews, mock interviewing, and more.
