Course Expectations
It's important to set clear and explicit expectations, and ensure students have a clear communication channel and can voice their own expectations as a student. In online and hybrid courses, it's especially important to do this, as students have few cues from the environment telling them what they're supposed to do. Students are naturally going to have questions as you progress through the course; however, if you communicate certain expectations up front, you can reduce the amount of time spent on technical or logistical issues, and you can instead focus on your students and their work.
In the BC Syllabus Template, 'Course Expectations' is called 'Classroom Learning Atmosphere'. Here is the outline:
What I expect of students:
- course expectation 1
- course expectation 2
- course expectation 3
- ...
What students can expect of me:
- student expectation A
- student expectation B
- student expectation C
- ...
