Course Outcomes & how outcomes will be met

After completing this class, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate listening comprehension skills by accurately writing in the target language what is heard, by answering questions related to the information given in a monologue, a dialogue or an interview provided by native speakers of different Spanish-speaking countries.

  • Demonstrate speaking ability by expressing increasingly more complicated sentences, and utilizing accurate vocabulary and grammatical constructions in a prompted dialogue, an interview, or in open-ended questions.  Produce original dialogues during pair/group activities and role-playing.  Ask questions with proper intonation and provide general information in the present and preterit tenses.

  • Demonstrate reading comprehension skills by answering questions orally or in writing after reading a passage in the target language; deduce meaning about what was read by making educated guesses using cognates and context to assist in the comprehension process.

  • Demonstrate writing ability by creating structurally correct affirmative, interrogative, and negative sentences using the present and preterit tenses for role-play situations or for descriptive paragraphs, with minimum spelling errors.

  • Assimilate additional cultural information through the introduction of theme-specific vocabulary, the description and recognition of photographs, among other visual elements, centered on the world of the target language.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of parts of speech by correctly identifying tenses, distinguishing between regular and irregular verbs in the present and past tenses, and recognizing different pronouns categories; show noun-verb and noun-adjective agreement; recognize and accurately use nouns, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions.

How outcomes will be met:

You will meet the above outcomes if you complete your assignments, participate in class, and do the following:

  • Study something related to Spanish every day of the week for 1-2 hours per day.  Try to hear, speak, read, write, and memorize vocabulary every day.
  • Always begin with the assigned sections in the Textbook.
  • Follow the calendar!!! Working a little bit every day is the key to success.
  • Complete the assigned homework activities working at least half an hour each day from Monday to Thursday.  Use your textbook as a reference tool to complete the workbook exercises.
  • Check the feedback I give you when you have instructor graded assignments.
  • Do Pronunciación assignments after the workbook.  Listen to the audio activities online as many times as it takes.  You are training your ear, and that takes time and repetition.
  • It is essential to log in canvas at least once a day or link Canvas notifications to your email or mobile Phone to get important reminders for the class. If you miss a class just check Canvas.
  • Keep up with the worksheets, verb tables, and Power Points lectures posted on the Canvas site.  I will post answer keys to some of the worksheets and verb tables too.
  • Explore the extra stuff that will make this language fun and interactive –  conversations with native speakers, web sites, music, movies, newspapers, magazines, radio AM 1360/Radio Sol.

Topics Covered

  • We will cover 5 lessons (lessons 6-10) of the e-textbook AVENTURAS. (You may see all lessons displayed on the Aventuras website; please ignore what not covered this quarter.)

Communication

● Communication will take place via e-mail in CANVAS only. If you need to contact me, e-mail me to my CANVAS account. Please try to write in Spanish as much as possible.

  • Please note: Even though there are five chapter tests, only four will count towards your final grade. I will drop the lowest test score. If you miss a test you will be able to drop that test. Make sure to turn in the homework of the Lesson on time, even if you drop the test.

EVALUATION  (Total possible points: 1000)

  1. TESTS - 400 points

We will have five short tests, one for each chapter, and no final exam. There are five short tests that you will have 30 minutes to complete for each chapter. You will be able to drop one of the five grades for the chapter tests.

Makeup chapter tests are, as a rule, not permitted. If you miss a test you will be able to drop that test, but you will lose the chance to drop another chapter test when your results are not very good. Otherwise, if you take the first four tests and get good grades you can decide not to take the fifth lesson test.

  1. Attendance & Participation - 150 points

In order to monitor your progress and assess you accurately, attendance and active participation are necessary and expected.

  • You get three (3) points for being in class each day.  If you come late or are leaving early 1 point will be subtracted.  You can only miss three days without losing points.

  • Please be on time.  If you can't attend, get your assignments from one of your classmates and check CANVAS for new postings.

  • In the event that I must cancel class, I will leave instructions and homework assignments on our class website on CANVAS.  You must check the website on days when class is cancelled, and you must keep up to date.

3.       Homework – 200 Points      (40 total points per Lesson)

This grade is based on completed assignments. If you only turn in one portion of the Homework or it is incomplete, then you will only get credit for what you complete.

The homework is due via the Supersite on the day is showing on the calendar, which is always on the day of the test right before class (11:30pm). NO LATE HOMEWORK will be accepted, please honor deadlines.

Homework is not intended to be completed during class time.

  1. Oral Project (FINAL) -  150 points  (4 activities to be completed for Lessons 6 to 9)

Required oral presentation. You will be evaluated individually. The work is prepared outside class time. The presentation is a way to evaluate your pronunciation, oral expression, vocabulary and structure usage, understanding of the culture, as well as creativity to put together all the concepts learned during the course of the quarter. (See calendar as well as Oral Test handout in Canvas for more details).

  • Extra Credit

THE ONLY EXTRA CREDIT I OFFER IS 10 points for taking the class evaluation. I will add the points towards your Oral Test.

  • Syllabus and Calendar Modification:

Occasionally, I may need to change the syllabus or calendar.  Such changes could include, but are not limited to, the number and dates of tests, homework assignments, etc.  I will announce changes in class and in the “Announcements” section of CANVAS.  Students who are absent when changes are announced are responsible for obtaining this information.  Remember to check our CANVAS site when you miss a class!

Drop Procedure:

If you decide to drop a course, you are responsible for doing the required paperwork at the Student Services Center.  Should you fail to do so, your name will appear on the final roster and your instructor will be required to assign a grade for you—in most cases, that will be an "F."  Many instructors, in fact, feel strongly that students who take up seats in this unproductive way are keeping more serious students from getting an education, so they use "F" grades for "phantoms."  Last day to withdraw ("W" will be posted on your transcript) 05/15/15 by 4pm

Inclement Weather Procedure:

  • ·       If there is a weather emergency and college remains open, use common sense, know your comfort level, check traffic advisories and other information resources, and exercise your own judgment about your local conditions and circumstances.  Communicate with your teacher what you are planning to do.
  • ·        Please make sure to check the BC website as well for any weather related information, updates or closures: http://bellevuecollege.edu/publicsafety/status/ and please set up your RAVE alert at http://www.bellevuecollege.edu/alerts/
  • ·        If I need to miss a class, please check the CANVAS site as well as your Bellevue College e-mail account for instructions.
